    KAY BAZZARD

    Kay Bazzard has been working in sculptural ceramics for twenty years and has recently enlarged her practice to include painting on canvas. Two years ago, Kay returned to full-time study through the creative lens of Māori Contemporary Art (ongoing), bringing compelling insights and a greater appreciation for storytelling as a visual medium.

    LIZZIE BEERE

    Lizzie Beere is based in Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand. Known for her loose abstract floral paintings and hand-built ceramic vessels, Lizzie works from her Open Art Studio on St Georges Road, Havelock North. A visit there and you’ll find her surrounded by vases of abundant droopy blooms, covered in paint or clay and a dog or 2 at her feet.

    SEAN BELDON

    Sean Beldon is a New Zealand landscape artist with a style that leans towards painterly with a modernist feel, swinging between representative and abstract. Sean travels from the far North to the deep South photographing landscapes and scenes, which become the inspiration for his paintings. Compositions always originate in the photography of the landscape and Sean uses the viewfinder as a primary canvas.

    Mauricio Benega, born in São Paulo, Brazil, is a Te Awanga-based artist who moved to New Zealand in 2004. With a background in visual arts, computer graphics, and motion design, he runs Studio Benega Ltd, creating murals, exhibitions, commissions, and more. Known for his versatility and experimental approach, Mauricio’s work is held in collections worldwide.

    Ros Bevin studied painting at the University of Canterbury Ilam School of Fine Arts before continuing her creative journey with design studies at the Whanganui School of Design. Recently, she has returned to painting, inspired by the landscapes and atmosphere of her hometown Hawke's Bay. Her renewed practice draws from the natural and familiar surroundings that inform and inspire her work.

    Chris Birch is an artist, school principal, and father passionate about giving new life to reclaimed wood. He crafts waka hoe (paddles) and other taonga, blending tradition, storytelling, and sustainability. Inspired by the wood’s history and character, he lets natural beauty guide his designs. Beyond waka hoe, Birch explores carving and painting, ensuring each piece carries meaning and connection.

    Scott Brough is a potter and ceramic artist based in Heretaunga Hastings. Scott produces handmade, functional pottery inspired by the natural materials of Aotearoa, the classical ceramics of Korea and Japan and the pre-industrial traditions of England and Europe.

    JOHN BROWN

    John Brown is a Hawke’s Bay based painter. He was the 2019 winner of the Molly Morpeth Art Prize and the 2012 recipient of the Kaipara Foundation Wallace Trust Award with a three month residency in Switzerland. He has exhibited extensively throughout Aotearoa since the late 90s and has works in private collections throughout Australasia.

    Robyn Cannon is a Hawke’s Bay portrait artist who works primarily in acrylics, drawn to the emotion and connection found in faces – especially through the eyes. When she’s not painting, Robyn shares her passion as an art teacher, inspiring children to explore their creativity and discover the joy of making art. Her work captures quiet moments of humanity, and her teaching fosters a love of expression in the next generation of young artists.

    Drawing inspiration from the natural world and specialising in painting intuitively, Sonia Chrystall works from her home studio in Te Āwanga. Increasingly, her work has moved towards an exploration of landscapes, while still allowing vibrant colour and layers woven together to define her work. Shapes move between abstract and realistic – symbolic in part of our inner and outer worlds, and the delicate balance and interconnection of all.

    Ben Cichon has always been an artist at heart drawing whenever able to, filling his school books with images of day dreams. From detailed renditions of classical homesteads in pencil to seascape pastels and oils, Ben has explored many mediums. Recently however, he has enjoyed working with charcoals on paper depicting the struggle, contact and energy of rugby.

    Santie Cronje is a contemporary artist based in South Waikato.  A galleried artist since 2008, she has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions. Santie's artistic expression moves between the inner and physical landscapes we journey through. Her paintings have featured in New Zealand art calendars, articles, and books such as ‘New Zealand 'Gallery’ and recently '101 Contemporary Waikato Artists' by Peter Dornauf.     Helen Dynes emigrated to NZ in 2003, and her New Zealand art portfolio alone is a credit to her craft and excellence in her field. Whether it be bespoke commissioned pieces, or curated exhibitions, Helen is truly an accomplished artist. Helen’s painting style is naturalistic and she enjoys expressing the beautiful interplay of light and shadow on the human form, working mainly in oil or acrylic on canvas. Recently, Jodi has been focusing on mastering watercolour painting and chalk pastel drawing.

    Suellen Gifford has worked for many years as a Ceramic Artist and Photographer in Hawke’s Bay completing a Degree in Visual Art and Design at EIT. She has exhibited widely from Waiheke Art Gallery to Whanganui Tree Gallery and has been accepted into the Selected Uku National Clay review several times. Suellen works in Porcelain and Stonewear preferring slip casting and hand-built methods. She enjoy making works motivated by nostalgia and joy.

    Aaron Greaves primarily carves Pounamu from his home studio in Hastings. Aaron also spends time on the road teaching carving in schools and organisations around the lower half of the North Island. He enjoys exploring organic form as well as contemporary Maori design.

    Hawke's Bay artist Tony Harrington crafts distinctive, graphic artworks influenced by his environment, whānau, travels, and the people, places, and experiences he encounters along the way. Utilising recycled timber, graphic design methodologies and elegant brush work, his artworks exude a sense of both nostalgia and current day references to the fabric which weaves together the cultural landscape of Aotearoa.

    Joan Hay is a watercolour artist having painted for 9 years. Whilst previously a potter, she had always wanted to try painting and hasn’t looked back! She loves the way watercolour moves, the unpredictability of the paint merging with the water and the excitement of watching a painting develop – sometimes controlled and sometimes letting it have its own way. She enjoys using a variety of tools in an endeavour to bring a uniqueness to her work.

    Andy Heywood was born tiny but is now much bigger. Andy lives in the coastal village of Haumoana and is a self-employed graphic artist and maker. Andy is also a curator and part-owner of the Department of Curiosities and Fine Things in Napier, a retail store that specialises in showcasing New Zealand hand-made creations.

    Monique Jackett is a mixed media artist, based in the Hawke’s Bay. She lives on a lifestyle block with her husband, two children and a menagerie of rescue farm animals. She is also a part-time primary school teacher and musician. The play of light at dawn, dusk skies, windswept coastlines and vast landscapes around Aotearoa provide inspiration for Monique’s paintings. Works are created primarily with acrylic and oil techniques in a semi-abstract style.

    Anna Jepson is a contemporary artist, of Ngai Tahu and Danish descent living and working in Hawke’s Bay Te Matau-a-Maui, New Zealand. She has been painting for well over two decades, initially inspired by attending art classes and completing a Fine Arts Diploma in painting and drawing in 2002.     Hawke’s Bay artist Catherine Jurgens paints joyful florals using layers of beautiful colours and wee touches of lovely mixed media findings. Catherine’s art studio is open for visitors on the Hawkes Bay Arts Trail and she exhibits in art shows and galleries across NZ. With a rich background that includes 30 years of primary school teaching and working in the film and television industry, Catherine has a lifelong passion for art.

    “I never give up on anything, it’s the only way to add colour for your life”. This is by Hungarian born photographer Andre Kertesz ( 1894-1985 ), known for his groundbreaking contributions to photographic composition and the photo essay. When Asaki Kajima was a teenager her father took her to a lot of exhibitions in Tokyo; photographic, painting, sculpture. They were very sensational to her at the time, and are still an inspiration for her artwork today.

    Helen Kerridge has always had an avid interest in the symbolism imbued in the paintings of the Old Dutch Master’s, and in this tradition she infuses her photo-realism with objects capable of connecting with, and transporting the viewer.     Elisa Koski-Taylor is an artist and a fourth-generation woodworker who immigrated from Finland to New Zealand over a decade ago. She has developed her own style by utilising New Zealand native timbers in her work. Elisa is fascinated and inspired by the history and stories behind the reclaimed timber she sources around Hawke’s Bay. She incorporates different geometric lines, patterns, and dimensions in her work to create one-of-a-kind pieces.

    Jackie Krzyzewski is a Hawke’s Bay based pastel artist specialising in photo-realism. Her subjects include animals, fruit and vegetables and still life. Jackie started her creative journey during COVID lockdown. She is a member of the Keirunga Pastel Artists group and Pastel Artists of NZ and has been the recipient of many local awards.     Sophie Lankovsky has been a potter and ceramic artist since the early 80s. She is originally from Germany and her aesthetic ideas are of European origin. Sophie loves nature – especially the birdlife in Aotearoa. Her birds are raku-fired to highlight their natural colours and her figurative work stems from life studies. Each figure is unique, capturing a posture observed directly from life.

    Kylie Law is a New Zealand born artist. She works from a stand-alone studio in Wellington. Her authentic artwork focuses on the beauty of nature – predominantly florals. Kylie translates delicate blooms into vibrant, energetic pieces using mixed media techniques and a feminine colour palette. Colour, shape and composition are key attributes in her paintings, and it is the combination of these aspects that make her work highly recognisable.

    Rosie Longdon is a ceramic artist originally from the South Coast of England, with a passion for the medium sparked in 1990. After completing a BA in Design: Ceramics at Staffordshire University, she later established her practice in Hawke’s Bay, where she now works from her home studio in Bay View. Inspired by the ocean and surrounding landscape, Rosie creates and teaches ceramics, exhibiting in local galleries with works held in collections worldwide.

    Gilli Marshall is a mixed media artist who enjoys experimenting with different mediums. She likes telling stories and manipulating the narrative. Gilli also works as an art teacher and is often inspired by her students. She finds the experience deeply enriching, and her work explores a diverse range of characters, reflecting themes of neurodiversity. She loves to travel, immersing herself in different cultures which is reflected in her art.

    Painting from her studio in Hastings, New Zealand, Abbey Merson's art encapsulates her love of florals, colour and light. Having been an avid creator from a young age, Abbey’s art box has never strayed far from her side. Her art explores the theme of seeking beauty in imperfection, resulting in emotionally evocative pieces that showcase her love of colour, composition, and artistic expression.

    Christine Parnell is an artist with over 20 year's experience. Her process is influenced by the medium of the moment, either watercolour or mixed media. She is inspired by her surroundings and relishes recording the Napier area as well as the more rural parts of Hawke’s Bay in watercolour. In contrast, her mixed media work is abstract and follows a very intuitive path. Christine has sold work both in New Zealand and internationally.

Liz's artworks are inspired by her love of nature and her surroundings.

    With no previous formal art training, Claire Sadler began learning stone carving andesite boulders in 2006. A later foray into wood has created the opportunity to explore different forms. Her approach is to explore the individual piece of raw natural material, to respect and feature all of it’s characteristics and proportions. With a preference for the more humble materials, her works are mostly created from Taranaki andesite boulders, locally grown trees and salvaged timber.
